__II Ἀρά personified as the goddess of destruction and revenge, ὦ πότνι᾽ Ἀρὰ σεμναί τε θεῶν παῖδες Ἐρινύες Sophocles Tragicus “El.” III; δεινόπους Ἀρά prev. author “OT” 418; but in Aeschylus Tragicus “Eumenides” 417 the Erinyes say that Ἀραί is their own name γῆς ὑπα; Ἀρά τ᾽ Ἐρινὺς πατρὸς ἡ μεγασθενής prev. author “Th.” 70; Ἀρᾶς ἱερόν Aristophanes Comicus “Fragmenta” 575. (Hence the Verb ἀράομαι.) Epic dialect always ᾱρ, Attic dialect always ᾰρ. (From ἀρϝᾱ, compare κάταρ ϝος.)
