ὀνομάζω (< ὄνομα), [in LXX for זכר H2142, נקב H5344, קרא H7121;] 1. to name, mention, or address by name: Ac 19:13; pass., Ro 15:20, Eph 1:21 5:3; of the use of the Divine name in praise and worship, II Ti 2:19 (LXX, Nu 16:26; cf. Is 52:11, Am 6:10). 2. to name, call, give a name to: Mk 3:14 (T, R, txt. om.), Lk 6:13, 14; pass., I Co 5:11; seq. ἐξ (cl.), Eph 3:15 (cf. ἐπ-ονομάζω).†

__II.b nominate, ὀνομασθεὶς εἰς δεκαπρωτείαν “POxy.” 1257.1, compare 1204.4 (3rd c.AD).
__II.2 εἶναι is frequently added pleonastic, τὰς ὀνομάζουσι εἶναι Ὑπερόχην καὶ.. whose names they say are Hyperoche and.., Herodotus Historicus 4.33; σοφιστὴν ὀνομάζουσιν τὸν ἄνδρα εἶναι Plato Philosophus “Protagoras” 311e, compare “R.” 428e (Pass.), Xenophon Historicus “Apologia Socratis” 13, etc.; compare καλέω 11.3 b.
__III name or call with reference to, in accordance with, or after.., τινὰ or τι ἐπί τινι Plato Philosophus “Respublica” 493c :—passive, ἐπί τινος Isocrates Orator 12.183; ἔκ τινος Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Tyrannus” 1036, Xenophon Historicus “Memorabilia” 4.5.12; ὁ τῆς ἀρίστης μητρὸς ὠνομασμένος Sophocles Tragicus “Trachiniae” 1105.
__IV utter names or words, ἐς τρὶς ὀνομάσαι Σόλων Herodotus Historicus 1.86; μάλα σεμνῶς ὀνομάζων Demosthenes Orator 18.35, compare 122, 21.158: —passive, φύσις ἐπὶ τοῖς ὀνομάζεται ἀνθρώποισι the name φύσις is given by men to those things, Empedocles Poeta Philosophus 8.4, compare Parmenides Poeta Philosophus 9.1 ; παρανομίαν ἐπὶ τοῖς μὴ ἀνάγκῃ κακοῖς ὀνομασθῆναι the name of transgression is applied.., Thucydides Historicus 4.98 ; ἀπὸ τούτου τοῦτο ὀνομάζεται (i.e. οὐ φροντὶς Ἱπποκλείδῃ) hence this saying is used, Herodotus Historicus 6.130.
__V make famous, in passive, οἱ ὠνομασμένοι persons of renown, variant for{διωνομασμένοι} in Isocrates Orator 20.19. —Cf. ὀνομαίνω.
