ὄρος, -ους, τό, [in LXX chiefly, and very freq., for הַר ^H2022;] a mountain: Mt 4:8 17:1, Mk 9:2, Jo 4:20, II Pe 1:18, al.; opp. to βουνός, Lk 3:5(LXX); ὄ. τ. ἐλαιῶν, Mt 21:1 24:3, al. (v.s. ἐ.); ὄ. Σιών (Σ., prob. in gem appos.), He 12:22, Re 14:1; ὄ. Σινά, Ac 7:30, 38, Ga 4:24, 25; τὸ ὄ., of the hill district as distinct from the lowlands, esp. the hills above the Sea of Galilee, Mt 5:1 8:1, Mk 3:13 6:46, al.; τὰ ὄ., Mt 18:12, Mk 5:5, He 11:38, Re 6:14, al.; proverbially (cf. ὄρος, εος, τό:
genitive plural ὀρέων (the form proper to Ionic dialect and other dialects) is required by the metre in Euripides Tragicus “Bacchae” 719 (iambic) and frequently in Lyric poetry verse, as Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Tyrannus” 1106 , and is alone used in LXX, LXX.Gen.8.5, al., compare “IG” 7.2225.18 (2nd c.BC), NT.Rev.6.15 +2nd c.BC+; but ὀρῶν (the Attic dialect form) is required in Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 719, 811, “fragment” 342, Euripides Tragicus “Bacchae” 791, and occurs in Thucydides Historicus 3.24, Plato Philosophus “Critias” 111c, “SIG” 888.120 (Scaptopara, 3rd c.AD), etc.: the Ep. and Lyric poetry forms οὔρεος, οὔρεϊ, οὔρεα, οὔρεσι probably have οὐρ- for the sake of meter for ὀρ- (so ὤρεα, ὤρεος for the sake of meter| in Doric dialect, Theocritus Poeta Bucolicus 1.77, 115, 4.35, “Hymnus ad Isim” 162): the Ion. form is ὀρ-, Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 9.21, al., Anacreon Lyricus 2.5 , see at {ὄρειος} (οὔρεσιν is an Epicism in 7th-6th c.BC(?): Semonides Iambographus 14.1, compare οὔρη at end of a hexameter, “IG” 12(8).445.6 (from Thasos)) ; ὄρος is found in codices of Herodotus Historicus 1.43, 2.8, 12, 7.176 and should perhaps be restored elsewhere:—mountain, hill, ὄρεος κορυφῇσι Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 3.10, al.; οὔρεος ἐν βήσσῃσιν 11.87; ἐν ὄρεσσι 1.235, al.; ἐν οὔρεσιν 24.614, al.; τρέμε δ᾽ οὔρεα μακρά 13.18, etc.; Γαῖα.. γείνατο δ᾽ Οὔρεα μακρά, θεῶν χαρίεντας ἐναύλους Hesiodus Epicus “Theogonia” 129.
