__II ={πάτριος}, of or belonging to one's father, μῆλα Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 12.136; π. πρὸς στάθμαν Pindarus Lyricus “P.” 6.45 ; π. ἄεθλοι imposed by him, prev. work 4.220 ; but π. ἆθλος of him, Sophocles Tragicus “Antigone” 856 (Lyric poetry); π. γνώμη prev. work 640 ; π. φόνοι, πήματα, prev. author “OC” 990, 1196; π. χέρες Aeschylus Tragicus “Agamemnon” 210 (Lyric poetry), etc. ; τὰ πατρώϊα the cause of one's father, opposed to τὰ μητρώϊα, Herodotus Historicus 3.53. —Grammars distinguished πατρῷος, as expressing patrimonial possession, from πάτριος as expressing hereditary manners, customs, institutions; see 5th c.AD(?): Ammonius Epigrammaticus “Diff.” s. see., “Anecdota Graeca - Bekker” 297, 1Suidas Legal icographus, etc. —The distinction holds in Attic dialect Prose; but Homerus Epicus and Herodotus Historicus use πατρώϊος only, and in all these senses; so also Trag. πάτριος should be restored in all passages in Trag. where the 2nd pers. syllable is made short in anapaest meter and Lyric poetry, Euripides Tragicus “Hecuba” 82, “Tr.” 162, “Ba.” 1368, “El.” 1315, Alcaeus249 ; but γῆς ἀπὸ πατρωΐης ends a pentameter in “IG” 12.978.
