ὑπόδημ-α, ατος, τό,
  (ὑποδέω) sole bound under the foot with straps, sandal, ποσὶν.. ὑποδήματα δοῦσα Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 15.369; ποσὶν.. ὑποδήματα δοίην 18.361, compare Herodotus Historicus 1.195, etc.; ποδὸς ὑ. Plato Philosophus Alcaeus1.128a, etc. ; whereas ὑπόδημα κοῖλον is a shoe or half-boot, which covered the whole foot (see. κοῖλος 1.1); ὑπόδημα is sometimes used alone in this sense, compare Aristophanes Comicus “Plutus” 983 (and Scholia (at prev. work)), Aristoteles Philosophus “Rhetorica” 1392a32 ; εἰς ὑποδήματα γράφειν put down as paid for shoes, Lysias Orator 32.20 (Pass.) ; δεξιὸν εἰς ὑ., ἀριστερὸν εἰς ποδάνιπτρα, of one who is ready for anything, perhaps alluding to Theramenes (see. κόθορνος 3) , Aristophanes Comicus “Fragmenta” 914 (perhaps Aristophanes Byzantinus Philosophus, compare Didymus Grammaticus and Polemo Historicus (“fragment” 101 M.) cited in 2nd c.AD(?): Helladius Epigrammaticus cited in Photius Legal icographus, etc. “Bibliotheca - Patrologia Graeca” p.533 Bacchylides Lyricus) ; similar words are ascribed to Pythagoras Philosophus by Iamblichus Philosophus “Protrepticus” 21 .ιά (where ὑπόδησις is used); τὸ ὑ. ἔρραψας μὲν σύ, ὑπεδήσατο δὲ Ἀρισταγόρης Herodotus Historicus 6.1, compare Libanius Sophista “Epistulae” 52; ὁ σπάρτος, ἐξ οὗ πλέκουσιν ὑποδήματα τοῖς ὑποζυγίοις Galenus Medicus 6.502.
