Samenvatting

Describes the flora and fauna of Israel and adjacent areas. Geographically Israel occupies a unique position from the biological point of view, situated as it is where the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa conjoin. Thus the flora and fauna are themselves unique for such a small area, with many species almost at the limit of their ranges: date palms, kingfishers and hyaenas exist alongside arum lilies, wolves, vultures, the curious hyrax or coney, pelicans, locusts-and much more. The Bible forms the background to the text, which includes Old Testament quotations and references to the everyday animals and plants described within those passages and which can still be seen today.
