mostly in plural, garden-herbs, opposed to wild plants, vegetables, Cratinus Comicus 313, Epicrates Comicus 11.15, al., Plato Philosophus “Respublica” 372c, Theophrastus Philosophus “Historia Plantarum” 1.3.1, etc.; but also λ. ἄγρια Aristophanes Comicus “Thesmophoriazusae” 456, “Pl.” 298: sg. is rarer, οὐδὲ λ. οὐδὲν.. ὁρῶ not a single herb, Cratinus Comicus 191; ὥστε μηδὲ λ. γενέσθαι ἐν τῷ κήπῳ Demosthenes Orator 50.61 ; ἐν τῷ λ. τούτῳ, i.e. the lettuce, Eubulus Comicus 14, compare 54, Epicrates Comicus 11.25.
