  or νῶτος, ὁ, plural always νῶτα, τά in early writers (οἱ νῶτοι LXX.3Ki.7.19(33)): the gender of thesg. is undetermined in Homerus Epicus and Hesiodus Epicus; neut. in Pindarus Lyricus “P.” 1.28, 4.83, Euripides Tragicus “Cyclops” 237, 643, Aristophanes Comicus “Equites” 289, “Pax” 747, Antiphanes Comicus 132.6 (anap.) , and always in Attic dialect accusative to Phrynichus Atticista 257, etc.: acc. νῶτον is masculine in Hippocrates Medicus “προρρητικόν” 2.30, 40, Xenophon Historicus “de Equitandi ratione” 3.3 (as cited by Hdn.Gr. 1.215), Aristoteles Philosophus “Historia Animalium” 512b17, 544a6, Ephorus Historicus 224J. :—back, both cf men and animals: singular, of a man, Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 5.147, 13.289, etc. ; of a boar, φρίσσεινῶτον prev. work 473; ν... ὄϊος καὶ πίονος αἰγός 9.207 ; of horses, ἐπὶ νῶτον ἐῗσαι 2.765 ; of an eagle, Pindarus Lyricus “P.” 1.9 : plural frequently used in Poets in sense of singular, δράκων ἐπὶ νῶτα δαφοινός Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 2.308, compare Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 6.225, etc. : sometimes in Epic dialect of the chine of an animal served as food, νῶτα βοὸς.. πίονα prev. work 4.65; νώτοισιν δ᾽ Ὀδυσῆα διηνεκέεσσι γέραιρεν 14.437, compare Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 7.321 ; of men in battle, τὰ νῶτα ἐντρέψαι to turn the back, i.e. flee, Herodotus Historicus 7.211 ; νῶτον ἐπιστρέψαι Oracle texts prev. work 141; σν μὴ δῷς ν. μηδενί “PTeb.” 21.8 (2nd c.BC) ; δοτέον τὰ ν.
